MULTIPURPOSE BAG-“SIYAHAMBA” (We are going!)

This bag is made from waterproof nylon and meets international standards. It is lightweight but tough and can fold up into virtually no space at all. It may be used as a knap-sack, a carry bag or a sling bag. Two sizes are manufactured-48X50cm and 37X40cm. The project is a local community based initiative giving local employment and contributing to local child care initiatives.

This bag serves a variety of functions:

KDA and Soweto Youth and Development Projects Supports Soccer in Soweto

Soccer is the most popular sport in Soweto and KDA Sports and Adventure Travel and Soweto Youth and Development Projects supports the following soccer initiatives:
Kliptown Youth Program: The coach is Siphiwe Nhlapo who is one of the leaders of KYP. He is assisted by Frans Mokwena.

Three teams are run under the auspice of the club:

• Open team with 19 members- they play in the Soweto SAFA Phillips league.
• Under 17 with 18 members- they play in the Pimville Local Football League.
• Under 15 team with 20 players-they are not presently entered in any league.

The main needs of the team are for kit and for the two coaches to attend professional coaching courses.
The Knights based in Lehae to the south of Soweto. Their war cry and nickname is Amaviyoviyo, “the Warriors”
The head coach is Roger Hlomuka, assisted by kit manager James Duma and honorary secretary Tshepo Duke Mandla.
Five teams with a total membership of 75 players are not presently registered with any league but they are keen to join the Soweto league.

• Open team with 15 members
• Under 17 team with 17 members
• Under 15 team-16 members
• Under 13 team-15 members
• Under 10 team-12 members

Their main needs are for kit especially boots, balls, registration fees and transport given that the area is some distance from other clubs like Lenasia and Soweto.

Street Soccer: This is a miniaturized form of the game recognized and supported by FIFA, played on a field 25mX15m and teams of 5 playing in a squad of 8. It is desirable that 3 of the squad are girls. This form may be played by players of any age but we are supporting this sport mainly in primary schools in Lehae, Diepkloof and Kliptown areas as part of the Life’s a Ball initiative.

Soweto Celebrates Arbor Week

Soweto .co.za celebrated Arbor week with tree planting at the Lehae Primary school in Lehae to the south of Soweto and at Nandi Primary School in Diepkloof Ext.

At Lehae members of staff of Bloomberg the Financial Information company based in Sandton, joined the members of the Roots&Shoots youth group over two days. The local youngsters from the R&S group are volunteers working with the educators at the school to assist in the development of the learners in the field of sport and environment.

Trees and refreshments were kindly sponsored by Bloomberg and the event was co-organised by the Jane Goodall Institute South Africa and Soweto Youth and Development Projects.

In Diepkloof Ext. Soweto the tree-planting was initiated and sponsored by the Southern African Association for Stationery, Home and Office Products in association with Staedtler and Pick and Pay Hypermarket Maponya Mall in Soweto who kindly sponsored the food and drinks.

The Diepkloof and Kliptown Roots & Shoots teams worked with the educators and learners of Nandi Primary to prepare the holes and plant the trees. The event was made really special by the singing of special songs to honour trees which were composed and sung by the children of the school.
Miss Soweto graced the occasion and assisted in the planting-she was a big hit with the children and the youth.

Again the event was arranged by Soweto Youth and Development Projects and KDR in association with the Jane Goodall Institute of South Africa.
