PROFILE
OF SOWETO COUNTRY CLUB
Soweto
Country Club is situated in Pimville, Soweto, between Eldorado
Park and Kliptown. The golf course was established in 1974.
It had many name changes from Pimville Golf Course to Soweto
West Country Club, Pimville Golf Club and ultimately was named
Soweto Country Club.
The
golf course has a long history. It had no proper fairways
and the greens were made of sand. Golfers from different
unions / associations fought for the use of the facility,
simply because it was the only one in the country used
by South African Black Golfers.
In
1980, development started and the sand greens were converted
to grass greens and for the first time, the club had a green
keeper or golf manages (the late Mr Fox Bosman) who was working
very closely with the Executive Committee members.
The
first President of the Soweto Country Club was the late Mr
A Mahlasi, followed by Mr T Moloi and the Late Mr Mike Nompula
who was president for sixteen times in consecutive years.
The
current executive is Mr W Lucas (President), Mr P Ramela
(Vice President), Mr Mabaso (Secretary), Mr W Jones (Assistant
Secretary), Mr C Kalmash (Treasurer), Mr V Mqcibisa (Captain),
Mr M Kekana (Vise Captain) and Mr A Nkosi (Junior Development).
Membership
The
Club has currently got a membership of 360 (from 600). Ever
since the 1994 elections, some of the members moved to other
Golf Clubs.
Our
membership is non-racial, and non-sexist. Soweto Country
Club is affiliated to Gauteng Golf Union and the South African
Golf Union.
 Achievements
The
Club prides itself in producing professionals who are currently
playing in the Sunshine Tour, we have Solly Sepeng, Theo
Manyama, Norman Mashaba, John Mashigo, Mononga Nomwa, Makhosonke
Mlotshwa, Rocky Tlhabanyani, Bafana Hlope and many others.
Assistance Required
The
club is currently facing a problem of a proper clubhouse
facility with an office. The Golf course has no security
and the clubhouse has many burglar's after hours.
The maintenance of the Golf Club is a challenge - the
fairways and rough are only cut once a month and the bunkers
need more sand. The club is in dire need of tractors, machines
and tools to help solve some of these complications.
Robbies Place
One
of the best entertainment venues in Soweto is located opposite
the course. Robbie's place is the ideal spot to enjoy
a post-match prize giving combined with a scrumptious meal,
otherwise the friendly pub is perfect to enjoy
a cold drink and discuss "the one that got away"!
