Housing Solutions (a joint venture by the Department of Housing
and the Banking Council) together with the Aids Consortium a
network of NGO’s and funding from US AID, set up a number
of home based care groups to care for sufferers of HIV/ AIDS
who were unable to care for them selves.
Thanks to additional funding from local and US church groups the patients are
being provided with meals and nutritional supplements such as E-Pap from time
to time.
A number of AIDs patients from the Vosloorus project have formed a small group
and have started to make beadwork articles for sale to earn a little income.
Normally they are unemployable in the conventional sense and household income
is zero.
www.soweto.co.za which
is owned by KDR
Sports and Adventure Travel (Pty) Ltd is assisting the
group in a number of ways including the marketing of the product
both locally and internationally.
The product offering includes “AIDS” badges carrying the Aids logo,
necklaces, key rings and bangles. Other items can be made to order.

The members of the group presently are 11 in number and their names are as
follows:
Hazel (the coordinator and trainer)
Esther
Alfred
Thembi
Cynthia
Dorcas
Ellen
Leonard
Lulu
Susan
Thoko.
The above patients ages vary between 30 and 45 years old, most are women and
they have 2 to 3 children to support. The making of the products in addition
to bringing in some income also gives them a great sense of purpose.
